A Wichita man will spend a year in jail for abusing his girlfriend’s 5-month-old pit bull puppy in May.

Justin McClellan, 55, was sentenced earlier this month after pleading guilty in August to one count of animal cruelty. His girlfriend told police she came home on May 22 after being gone for about 45 minutes and caught him having sex with the dog in a bedroom. An animal hospital that examined the dog after the attack noted that it had missing and cracked teeth, swelling on its muzzle, bruises on its hind legs and healing rib fractures.

The puppy, Frazier, eventually made a full recovery and is being trained as a therapy dog at local pet rescue shelter Beauties and Beasts. He’s named after the Wichita police officer who helped save him.

In addition to jail time, McClellan has to pay a $500 fine, court costs and $340 in restitution, according to Sedgwick County District Court records. He’s currently in the prison in El Dorado serving a 17-month sentence for an unrelated aggravated assault case from 2016. He’ll start serving the 12-month sentence in the pit bull abuse case after his sentence in the assault case is complete.
