See that school bus? There might be a cop inside watching for bad drivers in Wichita
If you don’t already follow traffic laws around schools and school buses, now is a good time to start being more careful. When you see a school bus in the Wichita area over the next several days, there may be a cop on board watching for bad drivers.
The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Kansas Highway Patrol and police departments in Wichita, Maize and Haysville for a special school bus safety campaign Monday through Thursday during National School Bus Safety Week, Oct. 22-26.
During the special enforcement, deputies and officers will ride school buses that have a high number of violations along their routes, sheriff’s Lt. Tim Myers said in a release. The law enforcement officers on the school buses will communicate with other officers positioned in the area when they observe a traffic violation.
Drivers can expect strict enforcement of traffic violations related to school buses, the release said.
Deputies, officers and troopers will issue tickets for school bus stop sign violations, in addition to other traffic infractions. Some other common violations police will watch for include speeding through school zones, following too closely and failing to yield to a traffic control device, such as a school crossing traffic light, Myers said.
