A Kansas man was shot in his shoulder while arguing with his common-law wife, Garden City police said.

Officers were called at around 3 a.m. Sunday to a reported shooting at a residence in the 1600 block of Safford Avenue, the Garden City Police Department said in a news release.

Investigators determined that a man and woman living together at the home got into a verbal argument, where a weapon was brandished and one gunshot was fired, striking the man in the shoulder, the release said. The man was treated a St. Catherine Hospital for his injuries.

No arrests have been made and the investigation continues, police said.

The man and woman were in a common-law marriage, police Sgt. Lana Urteaga told The Eagle. There have been no previous domestic violence cases involving the man or the woman, she said.

She declined to comment on whether police consider the shooting to be self-defense. The case remains under investigation.

Both people involved are being cooperative with the investigation, Urteaga said, and there is no indication that anyone else was at the home at the time of the shooting.
