A 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of shooting a woman while she was on her balcony early Monday, Wichita police said.

The woman, 36, whom police did not identify, was shot in the leg at about 1 a.m. Monday at the Brickstone at Woodlawn Apartments near 21st and Woodlawn. She was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Officer Charley Davidson said Wednesday the woman is “OK” and is expected to make a full recovery.

The woman had heard multiple shots while on her apartment’s balcony when she was shot, police said. She told police she saw two men with handguns leave the area on foot.

Police said Monday the two men are suspects in the shooting, but police are unsure why they were shooting or who they were shooting at. On Wednesday, Davidson said the arrested boy is the person police believe shot the woman, and police are not looking for more suspects at this time.

The teenage boy was booked into the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center Tuesday for aggravated assault, criminal possession of a firearm by a juvenile, aggravated battery, possession of marijuana and carrying a concealed weapon, Davidson said.

The teenage boy lived in the general area of the shooting, Davidson said, but he did not know what motivated the shooter or if the woman was the intended target.

“I don’t have all the information of the investigation,” Davidson said. “But I do know that this was obviously a very violent crime. We take those very seriously.”
