Man sentenced to 11 years for trying to kill his mother

A man convicted of trying to kill his 86-year-old mother in April has been sentenced to 11 years in prison, Sedgwick County District Attorney Office spokesman Dan Dillon said in an e-mail.

Sedgwick County District Court Judge Gregory Waller imposed the term this week on Glenn A. Fishburn, 53, Dillon said, on one count of attempted second-degree murder and one count of kidnapping. Fishburn originally was charged with attempted first-degree murder after he attacked his mother with a baseball bat and a machete, but pleaded guilty to the reduced charges in July, according to court documents.

Authorities were called to the 2600 block of South West Street around 7:30 p.m. April 3 in response to the attack. Police have said Fishburn was upset because his mother confronted him about his drinking that night, so he retrieved the bat and struck her several times, then got the machete and attacked again.

The woman, police have said, was in critical condition with lacerations and broken bones in her hand and arm, but managed to call 911.
