A man jailed this week in connection with the fatal shooting of his 22-year-old former girlfriend has been charged with first-degree premeditated murder and aggravated burglary.

Dane Thomas Owens, 27, made a first appearance in Sedgwick County District Court on the felony charges Thursday afternoon, according to court records and Dan Dillon, spokesman for the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office. Owens is next due in court Oct. 20 and is being held in lieu of $500,000 bond.

Authorities say Rowena Irani was found unconscious by her mother with a gunshot wound to her head at a house in the 2600 block of North Meadow Oaks after Irani failed to pick her up from work Monday afternoon. Irani died later in the hospital.

Police have not said what prompted the shooting. The couple broke up a few weeks ago but had maintained intermittent contact, Wichita police Lt. Todd Ojile has said.
