Court petition: Cowboys' Joseph Randle threatened to ‘blast’ car with child inside
A woman who described herself as Joseph Randle’s ex-girlfriend alleged the Dallas Cowboys running back pointed a gun at her car and threatened to “blast the vehicle” in the parking lot of a downtown Wichita hotel, according to a Protection From Abuse petition she filed in Sedgwick County District Court on Thursday.
Wichita police, meanwhile, said Friday that they have dropped a marijuana possession charge lodged against Randle earlier this week. Police, though, said they are continuing to investigate the incident.
The woman who filed the protection petition, identified in police and court documents as Dalia Jacobs, 22, went to the Hotel at WaterWalk on South Main on Monday so Randle could see the son they have together.
“The defendant became angry with me in the presence of our child,” Jacobs wrote in the petition. “I told my friend to take our son out of the home. She got into the vehicle with my son in the passenger seat. The defendant walked to his vehicle and retrieved a handgun.
“He then proceeded to approach the vehicle and point the gun at my friend in the vehicle. He told me at this point that he was going to ‘blast the vehicle.’ My friend tried to cover up my child with her body. The defendant then smashed the window with his fist, causing glass to shatter across my friend and my child.”
Officers were dispatched to the hotel to handle what was described as “a disturbance with a weapon,” police said earlier this week. When they arrived, no gun was found. Officers later learned another person had left the scene with the gun.
A small amount of marijuana – a police document on the incident listed it as one gram – was found in a hotel room registered to Randle. He was arrested and given a notice to appear in municipal court.
That charge was dropped without prejudice, meaning it could be refiled in the future, Lt. James Espinoza said Friday.
“This case is not over,” Espinoza said.
Based on the information obtained at the scene early Tuesday morning, Espinoza said, “the supervisor made the decision not to arrest him” on suspicion of other possible charges, including domestic violence. Jacobs included information in the court petition that she did not tell police at the scene, Espinoza said.
“She has since been recontacted and reinterviewed,” Espinoza said.
Jacobs’ attorney, Charlie O’Hara, said Friday there was a reason she was not more forthcoming the morning the incident occurred.
“We’re talking about somebody that’s pretty scared” about what happened that night and could happen in the future, he said.
The court petition states Jacobs is seeking protection for her two young children: a daughter born in 2012 and a son born in 2013. In a separate court petition filed Wednesday, Jacobs is seeking to confirm that Randle is the parent of her son.
She is also seeking sole custody of the son as well as child support. She also wants the court to deny Randle any parenting time with the child.
In her petition for a Protection From Abuse order, Jacobs wrote: “The defendant has a violent temper and gets angry very quickly. I am frightened that he will do something to harm me and my child. He has a history of being both physically and emotionally abusive towards me.”
The temporary protection from abuse order was granted, with a hearing on whether to extend the order set for Feb. 19 at the Sedgwick County Courthouse.
Investigators plan to present all evidence gathered in the case to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office which will then decide which, if any, charges are filed. That could include charges against more than one person, Espinoza said.
