The 54-year-old Wichita man who was found dead in a private lake on Monday morning has been identified as William R. Ammons Jr.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the identity Tuesday afternoon in a news release. Ammons was discovered submerged in a lake near 6600 N. Ridge Road by a family member on Monday morning. Family said he had been fishing the night before with a group of friends but stayed behind by himself after they left.

The lake is owned by the Fraternal Order of Police. Although Ammons had permission to use the lake, he was not a law enforcement officer.

Detectives are still working to pin down a timeline of events, but at this time, the sheriff’s office said, there is no reason to believe Ammons’ death was anything but an accidental drowning.
