A Sedgwick County inmate who had suffered from a chronic illness died Friday, according to a news release from the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.

The 61-year-old man, who had been in the jail since January on a felony charge, was admitted to a local hospital in critical condition more than a week ago, after reporting issues with his health.

In early March, the man was sentenced to the custody of the Kansas Department of Corrections; however, a few days before he was scheduled to leave the Sedgwick County Jail, he had to be hospitalized, according to the release.

His identity is being withheld at the family’s request.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Investigation Division have been notified.

This is the third reported inmate death at the Sedgwick County Jail in 2016.
