A dozen years ago, a neighbor introduced Jo Walters to Rainbows United as an organization that welcomed volunteers.

Walters was hooked.

“It is a wonderful group of ladies who work together to have one of the most special events in Wichita,” Walters said. “It often is how an organization makes you feel when you volunteer. They made me feel validated and appreciated.”

For the past 10 years, Walters has been involved with “Friends of the Heart,” the volunteer group that puts on the Fashion Passion Runway Show, Rainbows United’s signature fundraiser.

The first year, the group raised $16,000. This past year, it raised $300,000.

Walters, a Canadian by birth – but a “young, spirited 50-something … I just don’t tell my age, sister” – had spent a career working with individuals with special needs.

Fourteen years ago, when Walters and her husband moved to Wichita, she said, she looked for an organization to be involved with.

“This is a great way to help kids and have fun,” Walters said.

“When I moved to Wichita, I no longer worked outside the home. I needed something to do with my talents, passion and background.

“It has been a true ride for us all to see where we began and where we are today. It is energizing.”
