Goddard police are still investigating the circumstances in which two men were struck and killed by a pickup while crossing a residential intersection Aug. 21, interim Police Chief Don McElroy said Thursday.

Two men, 72-year-old Paul LaBrue and 70-year-old David Bell, were killed around 11:30 a.m. that Friday while they were walking Bell’s Chihuahua, Sugar.

The man who drove the pickup was initially arrested on suspicion of reckless driving, but was eventually released, McElroy said. The driver has not been publicly identified.

Police are awaiting the results of evidence sent to the Sedgwick County Regional Forensic Science Center to make further progress in the case, McElroy said. Once the evidence comes back from the center, police can consider possible charges, he said.

“Until we get the last piece of the puzzle,” the case has yet to be closed, McElroy said.

The Goddard Police Department and the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the case.

The Goddard Police Department is expected to hold a news conference about its investigation in about two weeks, when the evidence is expected to be returned to the department, McElroy said.
