When can you buy and shoot fireworks in Wichita? See the laws ahead of July 4
Wichita residents who are ready to celebrate the Fourth of July — and America’s 250th birthday — will not have to wait until Independence Day to light up the skies.
But before you start shooting off fireworks, you should be sure you’re aware of firework laws, which vary depending on where you plan to ignite them.
Here’s what you need to know before buying and lighting fireworks in Wichita.
Buying fireworks in Wichita
In the city of Wichita, fireworks may be sold from 10 a.m. to midnight starting June 27 and continuing through July 4.
Many other Sedgwick County cities have similar selling dates, though some have already started selling fireworks, including Goddard and Haysville.
It is illegal to buy or sell fireworks in the unincorporated areas of Sedgwick County Fire District No. 1.

Lighting fireworks in Wichita
Wichita residents may light non-aerial consumer fireworks within city limits from June 27 through July 5.
Aerial fireworks may only be ignited from 10 a.m. to midnight July 3 through July 5.
What’s the penalty for breaking fireworks rules?
First-time violators of Wichita’s firework rules face a $1,000 fine and/or 100 hours of community service. Second-time violations may result in a $1,500 fine and third-time violations are subject to a $2,000 fine.
If children are violating the laws, their adults may be cited. Similarly, property owners or occupants may be held responsible for any firework violations that occur on their property.
The city says Wichita firefighters and police officers will be patrolling during the fireworks season, with “increased enforcement focused on writing citations for violations.”
Other Sedgwick County cities have their own firework discharge dates and ordinances. In unincorporated areas of the county, fireworks may be possessed and shot from July 1 through July 4.
Reporting firework violations in Sedgwick County
From 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. June 27 through July 5, Sedgwick County Emergency Communications will be taking firework-related complaints over the phone.
To report “nuisances such as fireworks, parties and excess noise,” officials urge you to call 316-290-1011.
“This line is designed to take calls that do not involve a threat to life or property and allows 911 dispatchers to focus on emergencies,” county officials said. Emergencies should still be reported by calling 911.
