As America approaches its 250th anniversary this summer, many are looking for ways to reflect on our past and honor U.S. history.

One way you might do so is visiting a historic small town.

About 90 miles north of Wichita, Abilene was recently named the fourth best historic small town in America by USA Today 10Best.

To determine the top 10, an expert panel nominated small towns that were then voted on by USA Today readers. The towns had to have populations fewer than 25,000 and offer lots of history with “fun and affordable ways to dive into our nation’s past.”

“The United States has a fascinating history and exploring the places which most affected it is much more engaging than simply reading about it,” USA Today said.

Abilene has made the list every year since 2019.

What makes Abilene special?

“Abilene is the hometown of Dwight D. Eisenhower, a five-star general of the Army and 34th president of the United States — and that’s just the start of this town’s historical appeal,” USAToday said. “Besides the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum and Boyhood Home, visitors can ride vintage trains at the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad, tour the historic Seelye Mansion, take a spin on the oldest operational Parker Carousel, and step back into the Wild West Old Abilene Town.”

The town is also home to the world’s largest belt buckle, which has previously been named one of the best roadside attractions in the U.S. The buckle is more than 19 feet wide and 13 feet tall.

Visitors can also shop for antiques, wander Eisenhower Park & Rose Garden and stay at a home on the National Register of Historic Places.

Abilene has a population of 6,552 as of the latest Census data.
