No Kings protests return to Wichita and other Kansas cities this weekend

A demonstration protesting President Donald Trump returns to Wichita and other Kansas cities this weekend.

No Kings, a national grassroots organization, will launch a third wave of protests Saturday. Wichita’s No Kings protest, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m at Douglas and Broadway, is being locally organized by Defend Democracy ICT, Sedgwick County Young Democrats, Leading Kansas and other organizations, according to the event notice.

To accommodate Saturday’s event, the city will implement rolling road closures along Broadway from 21st to Douglas. The Wichita Police Department said the closures will affect both motorists and pedestrian foot traffic in the area.

“Officers will be present to monitor the event, as public safety remains our top priority,” a spokesperson for WPD said Wednesday. “Our officers are committed to ensuring the well-being of everyone attending the protest, as well as those who live, shop or work nearby.”

Speakers for the event begin at 12:30 p.m. at Chester I. Lewis Reflection Square Park.

The Wichita demonstration is one of thousands of No King protests expected worldwide March 28. The previous two No Kings events in Wichita drew large crowds in June and October, decked out with signs — and in some cases, costumes — to march the downtown area.

Defend Democracy ICT, one of the civic engagement organizing groups, has been regularly hosting gatherings in the city opposing the actions of the Trump administration.

“We’ve seen week after week that people in Wichita are paying attention and choosing to stay engaged. No Kings Day 3.0 is about continuing that momentum and making it clear that our communities expect accountability and a government that serves the people,” Defend Democracy ICT’s Shannon Boone said in a news release.
