30 ‘No Kings’ protests planned for Kansas. When & where to find one in Wichita
After nationwide organizing in June, a “No Kings” protest and march against President Donald Trump’s administration and policies return to Wichita this weekend.
The first No Kings protests, which saw more than 2,000 organized demonstration across the country, occurred on Trump’s June 14 birthday. Defend Democracy ICT, which has been holding semiweekly protests since February, organized Wichita’s No Kings protest, which attracted thousands of people, including many first time protestors.
The public demonstrations return Saturday, Oct. 18, nationwide, and 30 of them are in Kansas, according to the No Kings’ website.
Defend Democracy ICT will host Wichita’s protest at Douglas and Broadway downtown beginning at noon. This week will mark the group’s 36th consecutive week of gatherings.
“Consistency is key in our fight. Highly visible, peaceful protests are one of the most powerful ways to send a loud and clear message that we do NOT support this regime’s policies,” the event’s Facebook page reads.
The Facebook event calls the protest “non-violent, public and powerful,” and asks protesters to RSVP and bring signs.
“Momentum has only grown as more leaders and institutions choose to resist. We have kept that momentum going week after week here in Wichita,” the event page reads.
In addition to Defend Democracy’s protest, there will also be a march from the Historic Sedgwick County Courthouse, at 510 N. Main St., at 11 a.m. to join the main noon rally, No Kings’ website says.
The return of No Kings has drawn renewed attention from politicians, including from Republican Kansas Sen. Roger Marshall, who recently repeated a claim the protests have been funded by investor George Soros.
“This will be a Soros-paid-for protest, where his professional protesters show up. The agitators show up. We’ll have to get the National Guard out. Hopefully, it will be peaceful, I doubt it, as well,” Marshall told Newsmax.
Defend Democracy ICT organizer Shannon Boone denied those claims, calling Wichita’s planned protest an opportunity for normal people to show up.
“Kansans don’t need to be paid to care about their country,” she said. “What’s happening on October 18 is another example of ordinary people showing up — peacefully, passionately, and with purpose — to say that democracy belongs to all of us.”
