As the search for a missing Wichita man stretches into a new week, authorities are now asking people who live near Lake Afton to check their home security cameras and properties for any sign that Ian Alexander Shelton wandered by.

Shelton, 30, has been missing from the lake since 2:12 a.m. Dec. 3. The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office says his safety may be at risk because he “may have been experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of his disappearance” and wasn’t dressed to withstand cold outdoor weather.

Detectives are asking residents who live between 231st Street West and 263rd Street West between 31st Street South and 55th Street South to check their doorbell cameras, security systems and any recorded video captured in the 12-hour window between 2:15 a.m. and 2 p.m. Dec. 3.

“Residents in this area are also asked to check their property, including barns, sheds, garages, and other outbuildings, for anything unusual or for anyone who may have sought shelter during the cold weather,” says a Monday news release from the sheriff’s office updating the status of the investigation into Shelton’s whereabouts.

Shelton was last seen in a white 2012 Mazda Miata, with Kansas license plate 8898ALH, shortly before he disappeared from the lake, west of Wichita. Detectives say they are not searching for the car because it’s been found. But they want residents around the lake to check their home videos for the car to help figure out where Shelton may have gone.

Shelton is 5 foot 8, about 165 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a gray zip-up hooded sweatshirt, a black T-shirt with a white image on the front, blue jeans and white Nike-brand shoes.

“Detectives continue to work hard to locate Ian and to get answers for his family,” the news release says.

Anyone with information about Shelton’s whereabouts is asked to call 911, the Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division at 316-660-5300 or Wichita–Sedgwick County Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111. Crime Stoppers tips can also be submitted through the P3 Tips app.
