Where are the cheapest eggs in Wichita? We shopped 7 stores so you don’t have to
Your Wichita grocery store receipt has probably been higher recently, and one common item could be contributing: eggs.
A recent study by NerdWallet using data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found egg prices have gone up by about 53% nationwide in just a year. To compare, overall food prices have gone up 2.5% in the same timeframe.
While inflation plays a role in the rising prices, a big factor in higher egg prices is the outbreak of bird flu, which has also led to grocery stores having low stock available.
The current outbreak of bird flu, or H5N1, began in March 2024 and has been widespread ever since, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There have been more than 166 million poultry affected by bird flu as of March 6.
Since 2022, 23 Kansas counties, including Sedgwick, have seen instances in bird flu. Last year, the state saw 16 instances of bird flu, nine occurring in the fall and winter months.
Bird flu can cause lethargy, low energy, coughing, sneezing and nasal discharge for birds affected. In some cases it can lead to sudden death in flocks, which in turn can mean fewer eggs.
So, where can you find the cheapest eggs in Wichita? We went around to several grocery stores March 6 and 7 to answer to that question. We did not include sale prices in our survey. Here’s what to know for your next shopping trip.
What grocery store has the cheapest eggs in Wichita?
Out of Dillons, Walmart, Target, Aldi, Trader Joe’s, Natural Grocers and Green Acres Market, Trader Joe’s had the cheapest eggs as of our price check, marked at $3.49 for a dozen cage-free, large white eggs.
Green Acres Market had the priciest eggs we saw, with Chicken Track pasture-grown large, grade-A eggs from a farm in McPherson, Kansas, for $7.69 a dozen. They had Vital Farms Alfresco Eggs carton listed for $7.49, but signage posted said the vendor was out of stock.
Meanwhile, Natural Grocers had Vital Farms organic pasture raised eggs, typically found a higher price point than standard white eggs, for $6.99 a dozen. However, the Rock Road location was low in stock, with only three cartons on the shelves Friday.
Target had 12-count of large white eggs priced at $5.99 as of late last week. Aldi and Walmart had the same price, $5.97 for a carton of large white eggs.
Meanwhile, Dillon’s was the second-cheapest of the seven stores we checked, selling a dozen large, white eggs for $5.79.
“Due to recent supply shortages, fresh eggs that meet our high quality standards are limited in quantity,” a sign posted in the Dillon’s at 37th and Woodlawn read. “We appreciate your patience as we work to get all egg varieties back in stock.”
Both Trader Joe’s and Green Acres Market had signs asking customers to limit their egg purchases to one carton per transaction.
