Wichita man, 25, convicted of second-degree murder dies while serving prison sentence
A Wichita man convicted of second-degree murder in 2023 died Wednesday morning while serving his prison sentence at the Lansing Correctional Facility in northeast Kansas.
Angel Pedro Lara, 25, reported being ill Tuesday afternoon in the facility’s clinic, the Kansas Department of Corrections said Wednesday.
“Staff and emergency medical services personnel administered life-saving measures and transported Lara to a local hospital where he eventually died,” a KDOC news release said. “The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy.”
Lara was sentenced in October 2023 to 10 years and three months in prison for his involvement in the fatal shooting of 31-year-old Chance Martin of Wichita.
He pleaded guilty on Aug. 17, 2023 to second-degree reckless murder of Martin, who was shot in the middle of a Planeview neighborhood street around 7 p.m. on May 10.
Police have said Lara and his brother drove around the southeast Wichita neighborhood looking for Martin after Martin confronted Lara about his missing scooter.
Lara told police he shot Martin once in the chest out of anger after Martin and his brother traded punches in the street, according to an affidavit released by the court. Martin died at Wesley Medical Center around 40 minutes later.
Police arrested Lara at a house about four miles away from the crime scene, near Rutan and Sunnybrook.
