Police have arrested a 24-year-old man in connection with a fatal shooting Wednesday evening in the middle of a residential street in south Wichita, police said Thursday.

Angel Pedro Lara of Wichita was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder in the killing of 31-year-old Chance Martin of Wichita. Martin was found in the street shot in the upper body. Officers gave medical aid to Martin before he was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Witnesses to the shooting, which happened around 7 p.m. near Rutan and Sunnybrook, identified the vehicle that Lara took off in, police said.

Police then used Flock Safety cameras to find the vehicle in the 900 block of W. 47th St South, which is near Seneca and about four miles from where the shooting happened. The system alerts police if cameras spot a specific license plate or certain make and model vehicles.

Lara was found in a nearby home, Wichita police spokesperson Chad Ditch said.

The shooting happened after Lara and another male went to the area of Rutan and Sunnybrook, where Martin was, and an argument started in the street, police spokesperson Kristopher Gupilan said, adding that the police report did not say the age of the other male.

Police wouldn’t say what the argument was over.

Lara then pulled out a gun and shot Martin before he left in the vehicle, Gupilan said in a news release. Police are not looking for anyone else.

This is the city’s ninth homicide this year. There were 17 at this time last year.
