Which is Wichita’s favorite cat? Cast your vote in The Eagle’s cutest pet contest
Thank goodness for the cat distribution system.
Wichita came out strong in September for The Eagle’s cutest pet contest, sending in more than 150 pictures and descriptions of their felines friends for Wichita-area readers to vote on.
It’s so many submissions, in fact, that the first round of voting is happening in two segments. Voting on the first 72 cats ended Tuesday, Oct. 1. The rest of the voting goes from Wednesday, Oct. 2, to Sunday, Oct. 6.
After the preliminary voting, the poll of cats will be reduced to 70 in a poll beginning Monday, Oct. 7.
One common thread between the entries: Serendipitous stories of cats and owners finding each other. Cat parents sent in a bunch of stories about finding their pets on the streets, adopting them from friends, and getting connected through the Kansas Humane Society and other area shelters.
Among the stories shared:
Tifa was attacked by another cat her former home and nursed back to health by her now-owner: “She had to wear a cone for months, she dropped a ton of weight but she made a full recovery and is just the sweetest cat in the world. She was originally just supposed to be my foster cat but after everything we went through I couldn’t let her go.”
Bruno and Baxter come from Caring Hands Humane Society in Newton. “I said, ‘Hi, two cats please’ and this was the only bonded pair they had that day. Best decision I have ever made in my life,” their owner said.
Wink met her now-owner as a stowaway. “She rode home under my car from the downtown YMCA.”
Rory chose his new human himself: “I went to a farm to adopt a different cat, but he got into my cat carrier instead. He picked me and the rest is history!”

Remember: This poll isn’t scientific — it’s for fun!
