How hot will it be in Wichita and for how long? Here’s what forecasters say
An expected streak of triple-digit weather in Wichita has prompted the National Weather Service to issue an excessive heat warning for most of this week.
The warning was issued at noon Monday and is set to expire at 8 p.m. Thursday. During this time, Wichita and portions of central, south central and southeast Kansas are forecast to see temperatures ranging from 101 to 103 degrees, an NWS forecast shows.
Monday’s high reached 101. Tuesday is forecast at 102; Wednesday at 103; Thursday at 101; Friday at 101; and Saturday and Sunday at 99 and 98, respectively.
This week’s temps are expected to be about 10 degrees hotter than the average for this time of year, Wichita meteorologist Andy Kleinsasser said.
“Usually we’re somewhere in the realm of 91 to 94 degrees for high temperatures,” Kleinsasser said. “[Although] we typically get a hot stretch of 100 degree days each summer.”
The heat index value is expected to be between 105 and 115 in the afternoon and evenings. Heat index values are what the temperature feels like when relative humidity is combined with the air temperature.
Those numbers fall under the “danger” category, where someone who spends long periods of time outdoors could experience heat exhaustion, heat cramps and heat stroke.
Kliensasser said no weather records are expected to be broken during this hot weather stretch.
