Wichita woman, teen die after SUV strikes semi-truck on Kansas Turnpike; 4 injured

Two people from Wichita died and four others were injured after an SUV rear-ended a semi-truck Saturday in northeast Kansas.

The crash was reported at 3:10 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the Kansas Turnpike in Lyon County near Emporia, Kansas Highway Patrol crash logs show.

A 2021 Kia Telluride carrying six people was southbound on the turnpike, or Interstate 335, when it rear-ended the semi-truck. The SUV came to a stop after it spun and unknown amount of times, according to the KHP.

Erin Moreno, 42, of Wichita, was a passenger in the KIA. She was taken to Newman Regional Health in Emporia where she died from her injuries, the crash report said.

Anthony Barrera, of Wichita, died at the scene from his injuries. The KHP does not list juvenile ages in their crash logs, but the Emporia Gazette and other media outlets reported that he was 17.

The driver of the KIA, 44-year-old Guerrero Moreno Jr., of Wichita, was taken to a hospital for minor injuries. Three other juveniles were in the SUV, the KHP said.

Besides the two occupants in the KIA SUV who died, everyone else suffered minor to moderate injuries, according the Emporia Fire Department.

The driver of the semi, a 39-year-old man North Little Pulas, Arkansas, was not injured.
