A semi truck crashed into a van along the Kansas Turnpike south of Wichita, injuring three people and closing the highway for hours Wednesday.

The accident was reported about 9:30 a.m. along southbound mile marker 29 on I-35, a few miles south of the Kansas Star Casino in Mulvane.

A semi truck heading south on I-35 entered a construction zone where the left lane was closed and the right lane was open. The semi veered off and was able to get through a gap in the concrete barriers closing the left lane. It struck a van with two construction workers inside, Kansas Highway Patrol Lt. David Hundley said.

The two workers were taken to the hospital, one with serious injuries and the other with critical injuries. The driver of the semi was found unconscious and was also taken to the hospital, according to Hundley.

The crash closed the highway to southbound traffic. It reopened around 12:30 p.m.
