Users of three Intrust Bank ATMs were recent victims of “skimming,” police said Monday.

Wichita police were notified Monday of additional ATM card skimmers at three Intrust locations across the city, Sgt. Santiago Hungria said.

The bank began receiving reports of suspicious account activity from customers at least 10 days ago, said Hungria, who is leading the investigation. After reviewing security camera footage, bank officials and police found a person had placed the device on the three ATMs.

The person was able to retrieve the skimmer – and ATM users’ account information – before the banks noticed the device and notified police, Hungria said.

The skimmers were used at the Intrust Bank locations at 7800 E. Central (near Central and Rock), 8202 E. 21st St. North (near Bradley Fair) and 2735 N. Maize Road (near New Market Square).

A skimmer was also found last week at a Sunflower Bank ATM at 4101 E. Harry. It was discovered by an ATM user, and police recovered it before the person who placed it there returned, police said at the time.

Skimmers are placed over the card reader of an ATM with double-stick tape to collect credit and debit card numbers and drain bank accounts. The devices are not wireless, meaning that the people who place them there cannot collect information instantly but must return to the location to retrieve the skimmer.

Hungria encouraged Intrust Bank ATM users to check their bank accounts or get a copy of their bank statements to look for unusual activity.

It’s too early in the investigation to know how many bank accounts have been compromised because of the scam, Hungria said.

“Make sure it’s an ATM you’re familiar with,” he said. “Look for anything out of the ordinary or any mysterious boxes” on the ATM.
