Wichita police officers recovered an ATM skimmer on Thursday at a southeast Wichita bank, the department announced on Twitter.

ATM skimmer devices are designed to look like a regular card-reader, but they can store card data and PIN information. Scammers can then use the information to deplete the victim’s account.

The device was found at an ATM at Sunflower Bank, 4101 E. Harry, between Hillside and Oliver.

Wichita police Lt. James Espinoza said the department is expected to release more information about the case at a 10 a.m. media briefing Friday morning, in an effort to be “more detailed about this.”

On Twitter, the department said it was “able to get the device before any suspects did.”

It’s “always a good idea to double check with your financial institution if you are concerned about unwanted access to your bank accounts,” the department said on Twitter.
