State suspends Newton day care’s license over child’s injuries, possible abuse

State officials suspended a Newton home day care’s license Wednesday after discovering injuries a child received there “were likely the result of abuse,” according to an emergency suspension order issued by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

The child was hurt at Bright Beginnings, 305 S. Main St. in Newton, on Oct. 29, according to the order. The KDHE received information about the harm on Wednesday.

Immediate suspension of the day care’s license “is necessary to protect children” that have been in its care “from a substantial threat to their health of safety,” the KDHE said in the order. The facility, run by Molly Josephine Hillard, cannot care for children while the suspension is in effect. She could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday evening.

Parents and guardians of the children who attend Bright Beginnings will be notified of the suspension in writing, the KDHE order says.

The day care can ask a judge to review the decision within 30 days.

Bright Beginnings received a license to operate as a licensed day care on Aug. 1.
