Woman dies in crash on Wichita State campus
One woman is dead following a one-car accident Monday night near Cessna Stadium on the Wichita State University campus, police said.
Emergency crews were called to the rollover accident at around 9 p.m. Monday in what had at first appeared to be a two-vehicle crash.
The woman was driving west on 21st Street – that’s north of campus just east of Hillside – when she veered left and struck a curb and the fence on the north end of the stadium, said Sgt. Joe Springob of the Wichita Police Department. After striking the fence, the vehicle rolled and crashed into a second vehicle that was parked in a lot between the stadium and Koch Arena’s Multipurpose Room. The second vehicle was unoccupied, Springob said, and the woman was the only person involved in the crash.
“Medical units arrived on the scene, along with the police officers, and they were able to remove the woman from the vehicle, and she was pronounced here at the scene,” Springob said. Police have not released the woman’s identity.
The two vehicles rested about 30 yards from where the woman struck the fence. A portion of the fence had been dragged across the lot with the vehicles.
One eastbound lane of 21st Street was closed late Monday night.
