Authorities think driver in fiery K-96 crash that killed two was in wrong lane

Authorities say a fiery crash on K-96 at 215th Street West that killed two people over the weekend was likely caused because one of the cars involved was driving in the wrong highway lane.

Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Lt. Tim Myers said deputies sent to an injury accident at the location shortly before 11:30 p.m. Saturday found a Mazda 6 and a Honda Accord in flames. A Maize police officer tried to put out the fire and pull the drivers from the cars but was unsuccessful. Both drivers were pronounced dead on site at 12:04 a.m. Sunday, Myers said in a news release.

The Sheriff’s Office did not release any identifying information about the drivers, including their names, on Monday. Authorities think the Mazda was driving west in the eastbound lanes of K-96 when the crash happened, the release said. The accident remains under investigation.
