Authorities identify man killed in crash on Kansas Turnpike at 13th Street

Authorities have identified the man killed Sunday in a crash on the Kansas Turnpike as 33-year-old Josue David Elena of Kansas City, Missouri.

Elena was a passenger in a van hit by a Ford Fusion that lost control and went airborne shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday. According to a Kansas Highway Patrol crash report, the car was traveling eastbound on 13th Street when its driver lost control “for an unknown reason,” causing the car to jump a curb and hit a tree and a fence.

The car slid down a ravine and hit a drainage culvert before going airborne. It landed on top of the van, which was heading southbound on the Turnpike, then rolled off and flipped onto its roof.

The 28-year-old Wichita man driving the car — Landon Scott Semsroth — and the 36-year-old Kansas City man driving the van — Rosendo Neftali Gonzalez Hernandez — were hospitalized at Wesley Medical Center with “suspected serious injuries,” the highway patrol said.

The crash was reported around mile marker 54 in Andover.
