A 23-year-old Tucson, Arizona, woman is dead after an early morning crash near the western Kansas town of Sharon Springs.

Serena M. Hernandez was driving a 2001 Honda Civic westbound on U-40 about 10 1/2 miles west of Sharon Springs when the car went into a ditch at about 12:50 a.m. on Wednesday. Hernandez “overcorrected, crossed both lanes of traffic” and drove into the ditch on the opposite side of the road, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol crash report.

The car rolled “an unknown number of times” before landing in the south ditch, the report says.

Hernandez died Wednesday morning. Her passenger, 21-year-old Andres Ramirez Carreon of Tucson, was hospitalized with suspected serious injuries, the KHP report says.

Sharon Springs is in Wallace County, about 20 miles from the Kansas-Colorado border.
