A lack of cooperation is hindering police as they investigate a shooting incident on Kellogg.

A 36-year-old man was shot in the left shoulder as he was driving east on Kellogg between Washington and Hydraulic at about 9:15 p.m. Wednesday, Lt. James Espinoza said Thursday. He was taken to the hospital with a serious but not life-threatening injury.

A passenger in the car, the 19-year-old nephew of the shooting victim, was not hurt. Espinoza said neither the victim nor the passenger is willing to talk to police.

“You have uncooperative victims,” Espinoza said. “They might have seen who shot them, know the car and are unwilling to help.”

The shooting victim is a documented gang member, he said, though the passenger is not. Investigators aren’t sure yet how many shots were fired, though the victim was struck just once. It appears the shot came from a vehicle that drove past the victim’s car.

The location of the shooting is particularly troubling for police, Espinoza said.

“You’re talking about Kellogg,” which commonly carries a lot of traffic, he said.

“It could have been extremely dangerous,” Espinoza said.
