Coronavirus updates: Sedgwick County reports more than 100 new recoveries from COVID-19

Local public health officials reported more than 100 recoveries from the coronavirus disease on Sunday.

The Sedgwick County Health Department’s COVID-19 dashboard showed 103 new recoveries and no new deaths since Saturday. With 58 new cases, the number of active cases dropped by 45 in the Wichita area.

Active cases have outnumbered recoveries since July 5, but the gap has decreased recently. There are now 2,778 active cases with 2,532 recoveries. There have been 47 deaths attributed to COVID-19 in Sedgwick County out of 5,357 total confirmed cases.

Sunday’s numbers were a 1.1% increase in total cases, a 1.6% decrease in active cases and a 4.2% increase in recoveries.

The new recoveries appear to be the most reported in a single day. The latest county data shows a previous high of 102 recoveries reported on Aug. 3.

An additional 384 people have been tested, bringing the county’s total to 66,208.

The positive test percentage continues to hover above 10%. The latest figure was 10.59% for Saturday, up from 10.55% on Friday. The value is a 14-day rolling average. A positive rate of 10% or greater is an indicator that schools should start to move classes online, according to guidance from the Kansas State Department of Education.

The children and teenager age group had the greatest percent increase in cases.

Of the 58 new cases, 17 of the patients were in the infant to 19-year-old age group. That was a 2.2% increase in that age group’s total number of cases.

The 20-39 age group had 18 new cases for a 0.8% increase while the 40-59 age group had 20 new cases for a 1.3% increase. The 60-79 age group had three new cases, which was a 0.5% increase. There were no new cases in the 80 and older age group.

Out of the new cases, three of the patients were close contacts of another confirmed case. The other 55 cases are still under investigation for the source of exposure to the virus. About 49% of all cases in Sedgwick County have no known source of exposure.
