The increase in COVID cases slowed last week. Here’s how Wichita area ZIP codes fared
The increase in new cases of the coronavirus disease slowed in the Wichita area last week as three more ZIP codes passed 100 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
A map from the Sedgwick County Health Department breaks down coronavirus testing and positive COVID-19 cases by ZIP code. The online ZIP code map’s data is updated on Mondays. It can be accessed online at www.sedgwickcounty.org/covid-19/.
The 67203 ZIP code in Wichita, which has had 352 residents test positive for the coronavirus disease, has the most confirmed cases in the county for the fifth consecutive week. The ZIP code includes the Riverside area and parts of Delano, as well as areas farther north and west. It is generally bounded by Douglas, Main, 21st Street and West Street.
It also had the biggest increase in actual cases at 44 cases over the last week. The greatest percent increase was the 67228 ZIP code in northeast Wichita, which had four new cases for a percent change of 66.7%.
Fifteen ZIP codes in Wichita and suburban towns had larger percent increases than the 16.3% increase in cases across the county between July 27 and Monday.
Sedgwick County has 18 ZIP codes with at least 100 cases, including the Derby and Haysville ZIP codes, as well as three Wichita ZIP codes that stretch into Bel Aire and Park City. There are 27 counties in Kansas with at least 100 cases, according to data from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
The 67202 ZIP code in downtown Wichita has the highest testing rate per population, as well as the most cases compared with its population.
The health department on Monday reported 4,348 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. There were 608 new cases since last Monday, or a 16.3% increase in the cumulative case count in one week.
The number of new cases in Sedgwick County and the percent change in the case count were both lower than the previous week, which saw 974 new cases for a 35.2% increase.
The smaller increase in cases and smaller rate of increase last week pair with a decline in the positive test percentage of more than a percentage point. However, deaths increased at a faster pace than other pandemic indicators.
Monday’s report from the county health department also included 2,839 active cases, 1,466 recoveries and 43 deaths. Those were a 17.5% increase in active cases over one week, a 13.8% increase in recoveries and a 19.4% increase in deaths. Those statistics are not listed on the ZIP code map.
A full list of ZIP codes in Sedgwick County is available below, including the population, number of tests administered, confirmed cases and testing rate per 10,000 people. The county’s online map does not list the actual change or the percentage change in cases over time, or the rate of cases per 10,000 population. The Eagle calculated those values using the number of cases listed in county data on Monday and July 27.
Testing rates based on 20 or fewer tests are considered unreliable by the county health department. For total tests and total confirmed cases, if a ZIP code has five or fewer of either category, the county does not report the exact number. No exact percent change or actual case change could be calculated in those instances.
Two ZIP codes — for McConnell Air Force Base and Wichita State University — do not have data because they have no population. County officials have said that airmen who live in on-base housing are included in the surrounding 67210 ZIP code.
Many of the ZIP code areas in Sedgwick County extend into neighboring counties. The ZIP code population data on the map includes people who live in other counties, but the number of tests and cases only include Sedgwick County residents. The testing rate and the case rate per population includes Sedgwick County residents who were tested compared with the total population of the ZIP code, including other counties.
The Butler County Health Department has introduced its own ZIP code map. Its data is also updated on Mondays. Information on active and total cases in Butler County is included on the list below for three ZIP codes.
Names of towns from other counties are included solely as a reference for the relative location of the ZIP code.
