Check out QuikTrip’s new look and where it plans its latest Wichita stores

QuikTrip is working on a couple of new store sites along East Kellogg in Wichita in addition to building a previously announced store on West Kellogg.

All the new stores will feature the Tulsa chain’s latest design for its stores, which the company refers to as Gen 4 — or the fourth generation.

“Everyone’s been anticipating this new store design rollout,” said Aisha Jefferson, QuikTrip’s corporate communications manager.

The stores will have an extra 1,000 square feet for a total of 6,400 square feet, which in part will allow its kitchens to double in size.

There also will be a new, dedicated area for customers to place kitchen orders.

In addition to a new glass vestibule and more windows along the front of the store, there’s also a walk-up window.

However, Jefferson said, it’s not for daily use.

“Sometimes we have to close down the store,” she said of emergencies within stores.

In those kinds of instances, the walk-up window can be used to allow customers to still buy gas.

“We are being proactive in our thought process,” Jefferson said.

The new store under construction at 135th West and Kellogg will be the first Gen 4 store in Wichita and the third for the chain.

The first is opening in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, in March. Joplin will have the second Gen 4 store, and the new west Wichita store will open later this spring.

Jefferson said QuikTrip is not planning to replace its existing Gen 3 stores in Wichita, but most if not all future stores in this area will be the Gen 4 model.

More QuikTrips

QuikTrip already has announced plans for a new store at the southeast corner of 21st and Woodlawn, in what’s been something of a QuikTrip desert.

QuikTrip real estate manager Jake Barron said there’s no date yet on when construction will start.

“We still have a long ways to go,” he said.

Most likely, that store will open in 2027.

Barron also is working on deals to replace QuikTrip’s store at 143rd East and Kellogg, which had to close due to road construction, along with another store near Kellogg and Greenwich.

“We don’t have anything under contract,” Barron said.

He said there’s “an outside chance” one or both of those stores could happen this year, but, he said, “Early 2027 is a safer bet.”

Those potential QuikTrip stores may seem like they’d be awfully close together, but Barron said, “We use many processes throughout the site-selection process, and we don’t get hung up necessarily on distance.”

He said it’s more about traffic patterns in the area and the chain’s ability to serve customers.

“We’re super excited about continuing to grow in Wichita,” Barron said.

In other potential QuikTrip news — though nothing is imminent — the company is considering possible drive-throughs for its stores, Jefferson said.

“We actually are testing the drive-through, so more to come on that.”
