You can’t buy most alcohol on Christmas in KS. When Wichita liquor stores are open

Christmas week is here, and it usually brings a long grocery list, especially if you’re the one hosting.

If you’re planning on serving any holiday cocktails for your Christmas gathering, be sure to purchase what you need in advance. Kansas state law does not allow liquor stores to operate Christmas Day, one of the three holidays liquor store sales aren’t allowed.

There are no laws prohibiting restaurants serving alcohol Christmas Day, however. There are also no laws restricting grocery stores from selling beers or malt beverages, though you might have difficulties finding a grocery store that’s open on the major holiday.

Liquor stores are allowed to operate Wednesday, Dec. 24, though some have reduced hours. One Wichita store opted for extended hours.

Here’s a quick snapshot of popular liquor stores around Wichita and their hours for Christmas Eve:

  • Davis Liquor Outlet: Three locations include 2303 N. Amidon Ave., 1406 N. Waco Ave. and 8909 W. Kellogg Drive. Open 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Jacob Liquor Exchange: Two locations include 3049 N. Rock Road and 10221 W. 21st St. Open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Total Wine & More: 2762 N. Greenwich Court. Open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Goebel Liquor: 352 S. West St., Suite 400 to 600. Open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Groves Retail Liquor: 9983 E. Kellogg Ave. Open extended hours, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
  • R&J Liquor: 3015 E. Douglas Ave. Open normal hours from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The other holidays the state does not allow liquor stores to operate are Thanksgiving and Easter Sunday, according to the Kansas Department of Revenue’s website.
