Word of the Lord Church, Bread of Life to provide food Saturday

The Word of the Lord Church and the Bread of Life food and clothing ministry are hosting events Saturday to help people through the Thanksgiving holiday.

The Rev. Shedra Moore, of the Word of the Lord Church, has annually hosted a Thanksgiving meal for her congregation since the early 1990s. This year’s free Thanksgiving feast and coat drive will begin at noon.

Free tickets and bus transportation to Bishop’s Restaurant in west Wichita will be provided. Those attending must have a ticket.

The free tickets and bus rides will be provided at Century II Convention Center, 225 W. Douglas, beginning at noon on Saturday. Buses will return to Century II before 4 p.m.

Moore has become somewhat of a local legend for her Thanksgiving services that always start with her saying:

“First, the word.”

And the congregation loudly replying:

“And then the bird!”

The Bread of Life food and clothing ministry, 1301 E. Galena in south Wichita, is holding its 17th annual Thanksgiving Food Giveaway on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Connie Manolopoulos, at the Bread of Life Distribution Center, wrote in an e-mail that her organization expects more than 1,600 families to come to the event. The pantry will give away frozen turkeys and other food so families can prepare a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

Bread of Life provides food, clothing and ministry to more than 51,000 people each year, according to its website.
