Sheriff’s office: Shooting at 109th Street a homicide after wife dies
The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said Saturday night that a double shooting at 109th Street North near Woodlawn is now a homicide.
Melissa Bluml of Valley Center was pronounced dead at 4:36 p.m. Saturday, less than 24 hours after she and her husband were found with gunshot wounds in the 5900 block of East 109th Street North, Capt. Gregory Pollock of the sheriff’s investigations unit said in a news conference late Saturday evening.
Bluml and her husband were taken to a local hospital in critical condition Friday after deputies responded to a shooting at the address, between Oliver and Woodlawn, around 9:15 p.m. Pollock said that, as of Saturday, investigators “were still following leads” and that no arrests had been made in the case.
He added that investigators are seeking the public’s help to “solve this case” and urged anyone with information to call the sheriff’s investigations unit at 316-660-5300 or Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.
The other victim – Bluml’s husband, whose name authorities have not released – remained hospitalized Saturday, Pollock said. Neither he nor hospital staff members would provide a condition update. He also declined to provide further details on what transpired but said law enforcement planned to return to the crime scene Sunday to continue the investigation.
From the intersection of 109th and Oliver on Friday, law enforcement cars from multiple agencies, including the sheriff’s office, Park City Police and the Wichita Police Department, could be seen leaving the scene. At least two paramedic vehicles also turned south onto Oliver off of 109th Street before midnight. A helicopter circled overhead, at times shining a spotlight toward the ground.
