Agate rocks home decor

The allure of gemstones and minerals long has inspired designers captivated with their natural beauty. Slices of agate are particularly rocking home decor because of their mesmerizing crystal quality, swirling bands and range of subtle to brilliant hues.

Aerin Lauder likes them; she has brilliant green agate coasters with 18-karat edges in her home line. For his spring collection, Phillip Lim designed silks splashed with vivid agate-y graphics in brilliant blues. In the fall, Target’s Threshhold collection included gorgeous glass trays imprinted with agate patterns. While some products might trend in and out, the look is rock solid.

Garden tip: weeding

Mild winter days like this weekend’s are perfect for beating back winter weeds that are now growing and will become a nightmare in early spring if left unchecked. Clear seedlings with a sharp hoe and spread a thin layer of shredded leaves or compost to prevent further germination.
