Gardener’s almanac (Oct. 25)

So much for a first frost — This Saturday is the date of the average first frost in Wichita. Yet we’re looking at highs in the upper 80s, and a Saturday-night low of 60. I guess we can say that we are not having an average fall. But we are having a beautiful one.

Garden activities

Botanica Fall Festival – The Fall Festival at Botanica continues this Saturday with a moon bounce, obstacle course, games, crafts, activities, face painting and pumpkins for sale. Hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s included in Botanica admission or membership; children under 3 are free. More information can be found at www.botanica.org.

Daylily program — The Prairie Winds Daylily Society will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday at Botanica. Connie Larkin and Andrea Weaver will give a program about the national daylily convention. It is free and open to the public. There also will be a covered-dish dinner; call Sharron Gregory at 316-263-7608 if you’d like to attend.

Orchid talk — Karlene Sanborn of the Kansas Orchid Society will be at Botanica on Wednesday to talk about how to grow and care for orchids. The lunchtime lecture, at 12:15, is included in Botanica admission.
