Marion garden tour this weekend

Five gardens in Marion and its environs, including a garden at Marion County Lake, will be on the 2015 Flowers in the Flint Hills Garden Tour on Saturday. The tour is from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the $5 ticket benefits the Marion City Library. The gardens are not professionally designed but are about families and passing plants along.

Tickets are available at the library, housed in Marion’s restored 1912 Santa Fe Depot two blocks south of Main Street. Refreshments and displays of bonsai trees and floral artwork will also be part of the tour at the library. The library’s phone number: 620-382-2442.

Planning a move

If you are planning on hiring a moving company try getting at least three estimates, advises HGTV magazine in its July issue.

And don’t hire a mover without checking the Department of Transportation’s website, protectyourmove.gov, which has a database of registered movers and allows readers to check a company’s complaint history.

Tip of the week

During extremely hot periods, container plants may need watering twice daily. But remove any pot saucers, which will trap water and cause soil waterlogging.

Constantly wet soil will kill plants. The saucers will also create a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
