Free spring gardening classes offered at Wichita branch libraries

Need help choosing plants that thrive in the shade, tips for creating a spectacular container gardener or advice on keeping the hornworms off the tomato plants?

The Wichita public library and K-State Research and Extension have the answers.

The two will present a series of spring gardening seminars starting in late March at two branch libraries - Tuesdays at the Rockwell branch library, 5939 E. Ninth St. on the east side of Wichita and Thursdays at the Evergreen Branch Library, 2601 N. Arkansas in west Wichita.

Here are the topics as described by the library:

Top 20 Vegetable Garden Pests & Problems Tuesday, March 24 and Thursday, March 26. Learn about the top 20 pests and problems that plague vegetable gardens and how to deal with them.

Tree-mendous Trees Tuesday, March 31 and Thursday, April 2. Presenters will talk about how trees enhance life, from shade and wind protection to carbon sequestration.

Tips for Shade Garden Plants Tuesday, April 7 and Thursday, April 9. Plants for your shade garden and how to help them plants thrive.

Designing Drought Tolerant Landscapes Tuesday, April 14 and Thursday, April 16. Get a list of drought-tolerant plants to include in landscaping plans.

An Introduction to Container Gardening Tuesday, April 21 and Thursday, April 23. How to grow vegetables, herbs and ornamental plants in containers.
