The Grapevine (Sept. 27)

Talk on barn quilts

Quilt blocks are popping up on barns and other structures throughout the Flint Hills – part of the Kansas Flint Hills Quilt Trail. Connie Larson of Tuttle Creek north of Manhattan will be in Wichita on Wednesday to give a lunchtime lecture at Botanica about the blocks, which number 150 in 22 counties so far. Larson will show examples of the blocks as well as what they look like in process.

Her talk will be at 12:15 p.m., and it is included in Botanica admission. The trail’s website is ksflinthillsquilttrail.com, where you can see the blocks mapped out. Houses and other structures in Sedgwick County are eligible to be on the trail, Larson said.

Target to wear TOMS

People who love TOMS – the simple slip-ons that promise that a needy person gets a pair of shoes for each pair you buy – will love that TOMS is going to be in Target stores for the holidays with merchandise that goes beyond shoes.

Ponchos, denim shirts, blankets, wallets and mugs in simple lines are among the items that will be for sale at Target starting Nov. 16. Following the TOMS giving model, Target will give a blanket, meal or shoes for each item purchased to charities, including American Red Cross Disaster Relief and Feeding America.
