Botanical name: Iris histrioides "George"

Location: Xeriscape Garden

Description: Low-growing irises that add bright spots of color to the landscape in late winter. One of the earliest miniature irises, "George" is larger and more fragrant than most varieties. It is a brilliant plum purple with darker purple falls and veins, white markings and a yellow blotch. Grows as tall as 6 inches.

Growing tips: Grows best in rich, well-drained soil in full to partial sun. Needs moisture during the growing season but will tolerate summer drought. Plant as rhizomes in late summer or as bulbs in late autumn. It will colonize and increase year after year if left undisturbed.

History: Grown at Botanica since 1998.

Uses: Great specimen along a border or walkway. Good for naturalizing or for forcing. Its upright growth habit makes it ideal for containers or for rock gardens.
