Brothers known for longtime food truck are about to open a stationary restaurant
Until about two years ago, a black-and-white food trailer called Taqueria Los Coralles was regularly set up in the parking lot of Carniceria El Guero, the Mexican market that used to operate at 2916 W. Central. (That business is now a meat market and grocery store called Colmex Meat Market.)
Now, the owners of that food truck are opening a new Mexican restaurant called Los Laureles — Cocina Economica. The restaurant will open Saturday at 3088 W. 13th St., which is the space in a strip center that most recently was occupied by a business called Carnitas Morelia. (Previous tenants of the space have included Byblos and Gaga’s Grub.)
Los Laureles is owned by brothers Adrian and Odiom Gutierrez, who until recently had been driving back and forth from Arkansas City, where they’d set up the food truck. Now, they’re selling the truck in favor of opening their own brick-and-mortar restaurant.
The brothers, who both work other full-time jobs, will open the restaurant seven days a week. During the week, it will serve only breakfast and lunch. On Saturdays and Sundays, they will also serve dinner. The hours will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
The small space, which the brothers have redecorated and given a coat of bright pink paint, has six tables with four seats each. People can dine inside the restaurant, but the brothers also want to focus on carry-out business.
For breakfast, customers will be able to get things like pancakes, breakfast burritos, breakfast sandwiches, orange juice and coffee. In the afternoon, the restaurant will serve Mexican plates that feature different meats and stews plus rice and beans. The offerings will switch up every day, the owners said, and will include options like pork with red or green sauce, carnitas, chicken, barbacoa, chicharrones and cactus. The plates will range in prices from $9.99 to $11, they said.
On weekends, they’ll have additional offerings, including chicken flautas on Fridays and Saturdays, posole on Saturdays and menudo on Sundays.
The opening-day menu on Saturday will include carnitas, mole, chile rellenos, chicharrones with red sauce, and rice and beans. Anyone who visits this Saturday will also get a free dessert, served in celebration of the restaurant’s opening day.
The brothers say they may add dinner hours in the future, but for now, their full-time jobs won’t allow it. They’re happy, though, to give up grueling food truck work and enjoy the comfort of a stationary kitchen.
Los Laurales in Spanish is the name of a family of plants. Many smaller restaurants in Mexico often include in their names the words “cocina economica,” which indicates that the restaurant serves inexpensive food and is budget friendly.
