A native Wichitan will soon realize her longheld dream of owning a book store.

But her Delano business won’t be just a book store: It’ll also include a coffee shop and bar.

Natalie Macy and her husband, Josh Macy, are the owners of Final Draft, a combination book store, coffee shop and bar that will open in a 2,000-square-foot space at 1029 W. Douglas that was once home to Lola Candle Co.

The couple hopes to have the business open by June or July, depending on how long it takes them to get their address rezoned for alcohol sales.

The shop will include a book store that carries around 4,500 books — about 40% of which will be general fiction.

In the back of the space will be an intimate coffee shop with an 18-foot bar and seating for about 38. Later in the day, the coffee bar will also serve beer, craft cocktails and wine.

The Macys both grew up in Wichita but moved away in 2014 for Josh’s job in the aerospace industry. They were able to return to Wichita last year, and Natalie decided it was time to pursue her book store idea.

“I was so thrilled to move back to Wichita,” Natalie said. “But this is one thing I found lacking. I love book stores, and I didn’t feel like we had a book store that people could just go to and drink a cocktail or a coffee.”

She began researching what it would take to open such a business and looked at several properties. In January, Tony Abdayem (the onetime owner of nearby La Galette) showed her his property at 1029 W. Douglas, Natalie said, she knew she’d found the spot.

Final Draft’s coffee menu will include drinks like lattes, Americanos, drip coffee, matcha and nitro cold brew on tap. The menu will also include pastries and a few munches, Natalie said.

The vibe in the cafe, she said, will be more cozy library than bright-and-airy bookstore.

“My dream in life for a decade has been to open a bookstore, but we knew that we needed something to kind of pull people in that was more than just books,” she said. “I wanted a space where people could come and read or study and being kind of that moody atmosphere.”

The shop will also have a small space in the back that will be called the Editors Room, Natalie said. It will accommodate about 13 people, and she hopes groups will rent it out for book clubs and business meetings.

Natalie, who was a student at Friends University, grew up attending Peterson Elementary followed by Wilbur Middle School followed by Northwest High School. Josh Macy started at Kensler Elementary School, went to Wilbur and Northwest, then attended the University of Kansas.

When the couple returned to Wichita with their two elementary-school-aged children last year, they decided it was time to get serious about Natalie’s book store dream.

“We’re really excited to move back home and just be a part of this community and such a cool area,” Natalie said. “Delano has changed so much. Really, Wichita in general has. It’s fun to be back.”
