What’s the status of the new cafe at Douglas and Emporia?
It’s hard to open a giant new coffee shop at a busy corner in downtown Wichita without people noticing.
And although Mohammed Sudais Ruknuddin isn’t officially opening his new coffee shop — 11:11 Coquetry Maison — to the public until 3 p.m. on Friday, he’s had trouble keeping his soft opening under wraps. People have been wandering into the shop for the past several days, but it’s not completely ready to go: Ruknuddin hasn’t been able to get the products he needs for his food menu just yet, and he wants to have it ready to go when he flings the doors wide open.
The new shop, which has taken over the 2,500-square-foot space at 105 S. Emporia where A Legacy Antiques operated until 2018, is the result of a dream the owner has had for years. Coquetry Maison is French for “flirty house,” and 11:11, for those into numerology, is a moment of “divine synchronization.” Many believe that people who glance at the clock when it’s 11:11 should make a wish.
Ruknuddin has been working on the shop for months and recently removed the paper covering the windows, which had been blocking his progress from public view. Since then, Wichitans have been wondering about the cafe’s status.
Coquetry Maison will be unique in that it will stay open late every night — until 11:11 p.m. It will open daily at 6 a.m. Customers will be able to order from a menu of coffee drinks, protein smoothies, energy drinks and “refreshers,” which are a mix of coconut water, flavoring and cloud foam. The drinks, which come in strawberry, mango or coconut flavor, are served in plastic cans with a pop-top and featuring eye-catching layers of color.
The food menu, which will be available when the restaurant starts its grand opening on Friday, will include breakfast sandwiches, cold sandwiches like ham and cheese or egg salad; and a couple of hot sandwiches. The shop also has a self-serve pastry case that will be filled with Middle Eastern, Mexican and French pastries. It will also stock stuffed doughnuts, pretzel bites and bagel bites as well as cookies and brownies.
The shop also features a case filled with several different flavors of gelato and will serve affogato, which is gelato topped with a shot of espresso.
Ruknuddin has remodeled the space, which during the day is filled with natural light afforded by floor-to-ceiling windows. He’s filled the cafe with a variety of seating, from high-top tables to window seats to swinging bamboo chairs. In the center of the room, he added a dramatic sparkling chandelier, and one wall has been turned into an eye-catching gallery wall covered with framed pictures and artwork. The shop is also filled with plant life and greenery.
Ruknuddin, who said he used to flip cars and manage a convenience store, said that he’s been planning and researching the coffee shop for six years and finally found the right space.
A Legacy Antiques used all three levels of the building at Douglas and Emporia for three decades until owner Diana Watson closed it more than seven years ago. Since 2022, the building has been owned by investment firm Cochener Garvey Capital Partners, which remodeled it to use as office space for its companies Netability and Keycentrix.
The cafe’s entrance will be off of Emporia.
