Restaurant that disappeared from Wichita in December has reopened in nearby town
Fans of local chef Youssef Youssef’s hummus and gyros — and there are many of them — expressed distress when in December he suddenly closed his Sesame Mediterranean Kitchen in NewMarket Square.
Now, Sesame’s food is available again at a new address — and in a new town. Youssef reopened Sesame two weeks ago in the former Mexi-Kan Kitchen space in Derby. The address is 1906 N. Rock Road.
Youssef said he likes the spot because it’s in the busy Derby Marketplace development and sits near the former IHOP that is being turned into a Big Biscuit restaurant. Also, unlike his spot in Wichita, the Derby location has a drive-through window.
The new Sesame is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and is closed on Sunday.
Youssef recently shared the menu for the restaurant, which you can peruse below. It’s almost identical to the old Wichita menu, but Youssef cut a few items that couldn’t be made quickly for drive-through service.
His former spot in NewMarket Square is being taken over by a new Vietnamese restaurant called Banh Mi Bites. Originally, owner Christine Pham said she hoped to have the restaurant open this month. But she said this week that the opening date has been pushed to the second or third week of March.
