West-side Mexican restaurant just days away from opening. Check out the menu:
Opening day for the restaurant taking over the old Sticky Bird building at 616 S. Tyler is almost here.
Mother/daughter duo Leticia Ortiz-Salas and Giselle Limon-Ortiz plan to open Mexican Burritos — a quick-service Mexican restaurant — to the public on Monday, Feb. 23.
The restaurant is a reiteration of Los Mexican Burritos, which Ortiz-Salas last operated at 1710 S. West St. She closed it in December 2023 when road construction made it too difficult for customers to reach the restaurant. Before West Street, she’d run the restaurant for 16 years at 3005 E. Pawnee.
But Ortiz-Salas never lost her desire to get back in the restaurant business, her daughter said, and decided now was the time.
The restaurant’s menu will feature dishes like super nachos, tortas, enchiladas, burritos, all-day breakfast burritos, and hot Cheetos fries. (See the full menu below.)
It will operate mostly as a drive-through and to-go restaurant, though the tiny building will have room for about 12 dine-in customers.
To start, Mexican Burritos will be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. Once they get comfortable with the new space, Limon-Ortiz said, they’ll likely extend Friday and Saturday hours, possibly until 2 a.m.
The new restaurant will be called simply Mexican Burritos. The owners are dropping the “Los,” Limon-Ortiz said, because her mother never really wanted the article to be part of the name. It was mistakenly added to the original sign.
The modular building that will house the restaurant was dropped onto the lot in the summer of 2023 to serve as a home for Wichita’s first Sticky Bird restaurant. But it was open for only about a year, closing in November 2024. The building has been vacant ever since.
