Peruse the menu for Johnny’s Tavern, which opens tomorrow. What will you order?
Wichita has been without a main downtown burger-and-beer hangout since the decline of The Anchor, which had been a go-to spot for nearly two decades starting in 2004.
Starting on Friday, Feb. 20, the spot at 1109 E. Douglas that The Anchor previously occupied will open to the public with new tenant Johnny’s Tavern, a long-running and popular sports bar chain based in Lawrence.
Owners have been working on the spot for months and will start welcoming customers at 11 a.m. on Friday. After that, its hours will be 11 a.m. to midnight Sundays through Thursdays and 11 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
Want to start planning what to order now? You can find the full Wichita menu below. It contains several burgers, sandwich options like French dip and pork tenderloin, street tacos, build-your-own stone-oven pizzas, and entrees like fish and chips, chicken strips and teriyaki stir fry.
The menu also includes a Johnny’s bestseller: the Wilson wings, which are coated in a special sauce then flash fried, charred on a grill and served on top of a bed of fries. Appetizer options include sports bar favorites like nachos, fried pickles, giant pretzels with cheese and Buffalo chicken dip.
Johnny’s has been filled with 40 television sets, and it will be able to show all the sports packages: Basically, the staff should be able to tune a TV to any game a customer wants to watch.
The bar will have 48 beers on tap, including offerings from some of Wichita’s craft breweries. It will also serve its Blue Collar Lager, which is brewed for Johnny’s Tavern by Free State Brewing in Lawrence.
Eventually, it will have space for two outdoor patios — one in front of each side of the large space. Inside, there will be room for nearly 200 people.
