Wichita restaurant that closed two years ago is about to make a comeback

She’d been in the restaurant business for 20 years when Leticia Ortiz-Salas decided to close her quick-service Mexican restaurant, Los Mexican Burritos, in December 2023.

She didn’t love the location of her space at 1710 S. West St., where she’d moved in 2019 after having operated for 16 years at 3005 E. Pawnee. Road construction had been ongoing at the time and made it difficult for customers to access her restaurant, so she closed it and then reluctantly worked other jobs.

“She hasn’t liked them,” her daughter, Giselle Limon-Ortiz said of those jobs. “She’s continually talked about reopening.”

Soon, she will.

Limon-Ortiz said that she and her mother are teaming up to open a new version of the quick-service restaurant — whose specialties include super nachos, tortas, enchiladas, burritos, all-day breakfast burritos, and hot Cheeto’s fries — in the former Sticky Bird location at 616 S. Tyler. That restaurant closed in November 2024 after a little more than a year in business, and the building has been vacant ever since.

The new restaurant, which the owners hope to have open by the second week of February, will be called simply Mexican Burritos. They’re dropping the “Los,” Limon-Ortiz said, because her mother never really wanted the article to be part of the name. It was mistakenly added to the original sign.

Otherwise, the menu will be largely the same as it was at the last restaurant. The main difference, Limon-Ortiz said: It will offer fewer meat options.

The tiny building at Kellogg and Tyler has room inside for about 12 people to sit and eat, Limon-Ortiz said, but the owners hope to eventually add some outdoor tables. When it first opens, Mexican Burritos will be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and will be closed on Sundays.

After some time passes, Limon-Ortiz said, the restaurant will likely stay open later on Friday and Saturday nights — possibly as late as 2 a.m.

Limon-Ortiz said she grew up helping her mother with the restaurant and is excited to have a role in it this time. The duo liked the Sticky Bird building because of its proximity to the busy Kellogg and Tyler intersection, which also includes a Home Depot and a Kansas Driver’s License office.

Her mother can’t wait, she said.

“She’s excited to serve old customers and new customers.”
